Two new wines are ready for this month : Fanny 2023 our Ventoux and Escartefigue white 2023 our Vin de France. Perfect occasion to discuss more about the vintage 2023.
It was a very mixed year, with a very dry winter, which made budburst difficult for the vines, with stunted growth. Rain fell from mid-May to mid-June, allowing the water reserves to be replenished for the summer. The summer was mild, but ended with a week-long heatwave at the end of August, with temperatures in excess of 40°C (up to 43°C).
Escartefigue blanc 2023
Vines are planted on a pretty "fresh" area, allowing to moderate those hot temperatures and to preserve the fresh and intense aromas.
For this vintage, the wine is a blend of 2 aromatic and complementary grape varieties : Sauvignon which brings freshness and notes of exotic fruit, while the Viognier adds roundnes and notes of ripe fruit such as peach and apricot. A touch of Muscat will bring on top of it, floral notes.
Fanny 2023
Black grapes have been harvested later than the whites. Early fall was rainy and let space to an indian summer from the end of September to the end of October.
Harvest has been late, early October to take advantage of good conditions
The nose is intense with cherry and red fruits flavors melt with liquorice and zan. The palate is ripe and fleshy without being heavy, with liquorice adding a freshness of flavour that blends well with the cherry notes. Silky tannins, a wine with good length.
If possible, we recommand to open the bottle one hour before enjoying it to let all the flavors to open up
Here are two possible recipes that works well with this cuvée : a lamb tagine with prunes or a filet mignon with spelt and asparagus.
Bonne dégustation ou bon appétit !
